Special Representative: Janet Fraser

JanetFraserWhat organizations are you affiliated with? I was elected as a Green VSB trustee in November 2014 and am now a special representative as the elected school board was dismissed in October 2016.
What motivated you to join the VFPC? I wanted to be involved with and learn more about all the ways food intersects with students including access to nutritious food, food literacy, school gardens and farms, and food waste in schools. Good connections between the VSB, City and VFPC will benefit Vancouver’s students.
What are your areas of expertise in the food system? (and/or) What are your skills? I came to the Food Policy Council as a school trustee, consumer and parent to learn more and am building my expertise by learning from the VFPC’s work and the members I serve with.
Tell us one interesting fact about yourself; (and/or) What is one of your proudest food system-related accomplishments? When my children were much younger they went to a local community centre preschool program. Each student brought fruits or vegetables that were suitable for all the children and parent volunteers helped with the preparation. Sharing these healthy foods and trying new foods with friends was important to the students’ and parents’ preschool experience. At the end of each week our family took home and composted the cores, peel, stems etc. One year our compost heap was one destination on a spring community walk.
Which VFPC working group(s) are you currently active on and/or do you co-chair? School Food Working Group
